'Stevenson has created a true English heroine: feisty yet vulnerable and courageous in the face of fear. Blanche's story will captivate and enthrall the reader.' Phil Whitaker

Blanche Longhurst, a Second Officer in the Air Transport Auxiliary, looks forward to delivering a brand new Spitfire from a factory in Oxfordshire to an RAF base in Devon where she hopes to spend the night with her fiancé Squadron Leader Peter Mason. During the flight bad weather disrupts her plan. Trapped above cloud and with no radio, she runs out of fuel, glides blindly down, crashes in a field and finds herself in the middle of a secret war, in another country where the anti-Nazi offensive is less gung-ho but filled with subterfuge and personal betrayal.
Eleven years later, and with her face hideously scarred by fire, Blanche is now the single mother of a ten-year old boy. She is traumatised by her wartime experiences and has the death of innocent men on her conscience. In an attempt to ease her guilt she tracks down a French lady with a secret past, a Resistance hero, a former Luftwaffe pilot and a Devon fisherman; she hopes to renew these friendships but who is the man who breaks into Blanche’s house and tries to strangle her? Who will come to her rescue?

The character Blanche in this book is based on my late cousin Margie who was an ATA pilot and who was an inspiration to me in writing this story. Click on the clip below for a fascinating insight into the unsung heroines like Margie who played a critical, but largely unrecognised role in the Second World War.
